Awesome Home Remedy: Magic Cough Syrup

I have been down with a big bug...Super Bug I called it. I wasn't sure it was ever going to be gone, but after a couple of weeks, I've finally turned a corner and am feeling pretty close to normal again.

I was on meds from the dr. but can't imagine how I ever would have gotten through this tough time without my oils...they helped bring much relief.

This cough syrup really is 'Magic'....I've used it in the past and almost craved it this time of sickness.  It brings comfort and relief and I just have to share with  you.

My ears were full and achey, my throat was sore and I had a deep cough.  This REALLY helped!

This is just one more way my blogging bud, Tonya Ferguson, has influenced me toward a healthier world for hubby and me. Tonya posted this recipe at her
blog for Sweet & Spicy Magic Syrup over 2 years ago.

Please be sure to click that link for more detailed info about the ingredients in this cough syrup for best results

Using natural on-hand products like cayenne pepper, organic vinegar, local honey, fresh ginger (I used my doTerra oil) and some water...I also added a couple drops of clove because it has qualities to 'open up' breathing problems.

(I used crushed red pepper flakes instead of cayenne, so you wouldn't normally have the little 'chunks' in the syrup, but it worked fine for me).

Yes, it has a 'bite' but I'm telling you it brought such comfort to me.  Tonya's children have used this syrup for years...and they know it helps!

WARNING: DO NOT GIVE TO CHILD UNDER 1 YEAR BECAUSE OF HONEY!

I'd love to tell you more about how oils are making a difference in our lives, so please feel free to contact me for more info.

You're welcome!

MAGIC COUGH SYRUP

1/4 tsp. cayenne

1/4 tsp. (fresh is best) ground ginger

(I used 2 drops Ginger essential oil)
1 - 2 drops Clove essential oil, optional
(Clove assists in anti-bacterial & anti-fungal levels)
1 Tb. raw, organic apple cider vinegar
2 Tb. warm water
2-3 Tb. local raw honey

In a small, clean jar, dissolve cayenne and ginger in apple cider vinegar and water. Add honey and shake well.
Take 1 - 2 Tablespoons, as needed, for cough or sore throat. Shake well each time.  Does not need to be refrigerated if using in a few days time.
(I normally take in one batch in a day's time).

Cinnamon Vanilla Sugar Scrub

I not only enjoy giving scrubs as gifts, I love using them and trying new recipes.

So when I came across this recipe at Sewlicious Home Decor, I knew I was going to have to try it.  I substituted part white sugar for the brown, and reduced the oil from 1/2 c. to 1/3 c. You can always add a little more if you desire.

I like my oils to leave me feeling soft, but not greasy.

And I LOVE that Marti also shares a free printable to add to your container.
Go to her site (at the link above) and check that out.  It's simple, easy and FREE! Adds a special touch too.

I guess you could add 'coconut' to the title of this recipe, as it does contain coconut oil. You can use other oils if that's all you have on hand. (I've used canola or olive oils in other recipes).

This simple scrub smells (& tastes!;-) wonderful, and leaves your hands, feet, elbows, knees, etc. feeling smooth and soft. With summer in our minds now, this scrub will help you feel like showing off your hands and feet more.

Try it soon.

CINNAMON VANILLA SUGAR SCRUB

3 c. brown sugar
1 c. white sugar
2 Tb. cinnamon
2/3 - 3/4 c. honey
1/3 c. coconut oil
2 tsp. vanilla

In glass bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon. Add honey, oil and vanilla; stir well.  Place into jars or plastic containers.

Chocolate (Coconut) Body Scrub!!

Hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful EASTER day!

Thanks to Marilyn at 4 U with Love for this wonderfully delicious and easy-to-make sugar scrub.

It's NO-GUILT chocolate, and it's really OK to eat it if you want.
(Trust me on that one!;)

Marilyn has  'Spa Day Saturdays' and I was so glad to find this yummy concotion there.

We all deserve some pampering...and it doesn't have to be expensive.

This scrub is awesome!

Easy to make..with ingredients you most likely have on hand...great to give as a gift.  Mix it up in minutes - I'm wild about quick recipes!

(Sure wish we had smell-a-'puter so you could get a good whiff!=)

From Marilyn's blog..."I was inspired by Chocolate...but zero guilt chocolate.  How does that sound?   Let me first share what I've learned, via surfing the internet, about chocolate in beauty products.
#1 - Chocolate is a good moisturizer that rejuvenates and nourishes the skin
#2 - Chocolate has powerful anti-oxidant powers
#3 - It's anti-oxidant properties may prevent free radicals from causing damage to skin and may smooth out wrinkles"

I've made a number of sugar scrubs, especially at holiday time, and have learned I prefer less oil to sugar ratio, using 1/4 c. oil plus 1 Tb.per 1 c. sugar, but of course, you can always add more if that's your preference. I want to feel smooth, not greasy, but to each his (or her) own.

How about the idea of making chocolate/coconut sugar scrub?  Use coconut oil and add coconut extract instead of the vanilla.  MMM good!

I didn't have the cocoa butter, but that would be a fantastic addition!

CHOCOLATE BODY SCRUB

1/2 c. (+ 2 Tb.) light olive (or coconut) oil
1 Tbsp cocoa butter (optional)
2 c. sugar
2 Tb. cocoa powder
1 tsp. vanilla (or coconut) extract

Pour oil into a microwavable bowl. Add cocoa butter if using.

Microwave on high in 20 second intervals until the cocoa butter is almost melted. (or until oil is just heated slightly).

Stir in sugar, vanilla and cocoa powder to the oil.

Stir until mixed thoroughly.

When cooled, place scrub in mason jars or plastic container with lid.  (Tie with a ribbon to give as a gift). Use on your elbows, feet, hands and in the shower.  I love using it on my hands anytime they're feeling rough.
